Black Ostrich Plume Feather

Black Ostrich Plume Feather

Black ostrich feathers are one of the most popular colors for ostrich feathers. If i had to guess i would say that dyed white ostrich feathers would be the most popular ostrich feather color. But black ostrich feathers are up there in popularity.

When it comes to ostrich feathers, there are 2 main types - ostrich drabs and ostrich plumes. The plumes are the fuller and larger feather, with the drabs being stiffer and smaller.

Ostrich feathers, both plumes and drabs are naturally between off white and brown. The cleaner feathers (ie. the less brown ostrich feathers) are bleached white, to have a very soft and fluffy cloud-like look to them. The darker brown ostrich feathers are used to be dyed darker colors, ie. dyed black ostrich feathers. And that’s how they make those beautiful big black ostrich plumes and the slick looking jet black ostrich drabs.

As far as personal taste goes, i love black ostrich feathers - both black ostrich drabs and black ostrich plumes.

Sorry for only posting two pictures of black ostrich feathers, i will post more soon.

Thats it for now, thanks for reading.

Ostrich drabs are usually much smaller than the ostrich plume feathers. While to the untrained eye and from a far they may look somewhat similar, but they are very very different. The Ostrich Drab feather hairs (also referred to as fibers) is thinner and not as tall as the ostrich plume feather hairs. Same goes for the stick (also referred to as : bone or quill) that holds the ostrich drab fibers in place, The hairs on Ostrich drabs are also stiffer and dont hang as much as the plume fibers.

Ostrich Drab feathers are available in sizes that range from 8 - 9 inches all the way up to 22 inches +. As well as all sizes in between. Drabs best used for small to medium size centerpieces, costumes, masks, art projects, and floral arrangements.
