Black Ostrich Plume Feather

Black Ostrich Plume Feather

Black ostrich feathers are one of the most popular colors for ostrich feathers. If i had to guess i would say that dyed white ostrich feathers would be the most popular ostrich feather color. But black ostrich feathers are up there in popularity.

When it comes to ostrich feathers, there are 2 main types - ostrich drabs and ostrich plumes. The plumes are the fuller and larger feather, with the drabs being stiffer and smaller.

Ostrich feathers, both plumes and drabs are naturally between off white and brown. The cleaner feathers (ie. the less brown ostrich feathers) are bleached white, to have a very soft and fluffy cloud-like look to them. The darker brown ostrich feathers are used to be dyed darker colors, ie. dyed black ostrich feathers. And that’s how they make those beautiful big black ostrich plumes and the slick looking jet black ostrich drabs.

As far as personal taste goes, i love black ostrich feathers - both black ostrich drabs and black ostrich plumes.

Sorry for only posting two pictures of black ostrich feathers, i will post more soon.

Thats it for now, thanks for reading.

Ostrich Boas

Ostrich Boas

Ostrich boas are one of the most popular feather boas used today. Ostrich boas are made from the stripped fibers of Ostrich Plumes feathers. They strip the feather fibers and twist them into boas. These boas are used in Broadway shows, Hollywood, Movies, millinery projects, costumes and much much more. While you can get the run of the mill ostrich boa in a few different weights (it goes by ply - where you can get anything from 1-ply boa to a 8 or 10-ply boa), most fancy feather suppliers stock 2 - 4 ply boas in standard colors. Custom boas are available, please contact me if you would like a name/number for a custom boa makers.

Ostrich spads is another type of Ostrich Feather (like Ostrich Drabs & Ostrich Plumes). Ostrich Spads are typically more expensive then drabs & plumes. They are not as nice or as full looking as the Ostrich Drab feather or the Ostrich plume feather.

In most cases where ostrich spads are used as an alternative to drabs or plumes, the feathers are steamed heavily, and trimmed with a scissors to give it the look of a long drab feather. Ostrich spad feathers are usually available in sizes ranging from 18 to 28 inches.

Ostrich Drabs - Ostrich Drab Feathers

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Ostrich drabs are usually much smaller than the ostrich plume feathers. While to the untrained eye and from a far they may look somewhat similar, but they are very very different. The Ostrich Drab feather hairs (also referred to as fibers) is thinner and not as tall as the ostrich plume feather hairs. Same goes for the stick (also referred to as : bone or quill) that holds the ostrich drab fibers in place, The hairs on Ostrich drabs are also stiffer and dont hang as much as the plume fibers.

Ostrich Drab feathers are available in sizes that range from 8 - 9 inches all the way up to 22 inches +. As well as all sizes in between. Drabs best used for small to medium size centerpieces, costumes, masks, art projects, and floral arrangements.

Ostrich Plume Feathers are large ostrich feathers, that are by far the prettiest ostrich feather. They have strong quills that measure about the thickness of a pen. The fluffy fibers can go to 10 inches in length. These Ostrich Plume Feathers are used for wedding centerpieces, feather centerpieces, ostrich feather gowns, and most things in ostrich feather fashion. The Ostrich Feather Plumes have very nice fibers and tips that hang down. It is very important to have the ostrich feathers cleaned, steamed and brushed for the best ostrich plume look possible. This is done by hand at the hold school fancy feather suppliers.

Where Ostrich Feathers Come From

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Ostrich Feathers come from Ostrich Birds. The Ostrich is a big bird that cannot fly (most birds fly, those that don’t are referred to as “flightless”. The Ostrich comes from Africa and formerly of parts of the Middle East.

Ostriches are very unique in the way they look. They have long necks and long legs and run very fast (~ 46 mph!), so good luck trying to catch one :) That speed makes the ostrich the fastest on land animal. The ostrich is also the biggest current species of birds and creates the biggest egg of any other bird.
